Prayers Were No Help by Paul Lawrence

Prayers Were No Help coverPrayers Were No Help is an interesting read, and it has a superb title for the story. I have a cordial dislike to most overtly Christian literature, despite being Catholic myself. I usually find it too didactic. But this volume has superb writing in a line-edit sense—I didn’t have a single wince as I read, and that’s a rarer occurrence than I would wish.

The book opens with the main character dealing with his wife dying of pancreatic cancer, and it’s easy to sympathize with his terrible plight. The faith journey the character takes is believable and interesting, and the result of his increased faith is inspiring.

Pacing-wise, the story moves right along, and that is also a rarer thing than I could wish. If you’re looking for a faith-based narrative without a saccharine aftertaste, Prayers Were No Help is a worthy read. Thanks for the tip! Like you, I usually avoid Christian literature (or any literature written with the sole premise to teach us something, including the latest Jodi Piccoult book), because I don’t like being hit over the head with a lesson. But anything written honestly that allows me to see the world from someone else’s point of view is a good thing.

  8. I agree with what you’ve said about Christian literature, and I, too, grew up Catholic. I’ve seen hypocrisy from overtly “Christian” folks than I have from ones who do not preach. That being said, I’d definitely check out that book by Paul Lawrence.
