Now this is a holiday I can get into–it ranks right up there with Tell a Fairy Tale Day in my book. It was chosen because it was on this very day, March 25th, that Frodo dropped the ring into Mount Doom. 🙂
Tolkien was a huge influence on me as a teenager. My home life hadn’t been happy, and it all seemed to come to a head in junior high and high school. Books were my favorite escape, and nothing could touch The Lord of the Rings. The first time I read it, I did the classic carrying it with me from room to room, bumping into things because I wouldn’t put it down.
But LOTR has been more to me than a book I read long ago. It’s one of the few books I reread almost every year, and each time it seems like the book has grown, too. There’s always a little more Professor Tolkien can teach me. Now that’s powerful writing.
I’m posting some of my favorite quotes here, but please feel free to tell me some of yours. Or your favorite scenes or characters. Or especially if Tolkien’s work touched your heart in some special way.
In the meantime–read on. It’s the perfect day to read a little Tolkien. 🙂

Tolkien was very poetic–he wrote quite a few verses, some of them quite long, in the Lord of the Rings. And I like that quote, too.

These are some great quotes! I was the same way with The Lord of the Rings when I was younger, and I still enjoy reading them over and over!

That seems to be the clear favorite so far. It was actually an eagle blessing exchanged between Gandalf and the great eagles who rescued them from the goblins and wargs (in the Hobbit).

Clearly this day is prominent in South Africa as my son hasn’t mentioned it. He is Tolkien crazy and has read Lord of the Rings three times already.

Jacqui and Robbie–it’s an obscure holiday, but it might only be US. That’s okay. I celebrate the British National Poetry Day on Twitter along with the American one. These things are mostly for fun, anyway. Even I wouldn’t give someone the day off for it. 🙂

This is something that we share, Cathleen. Tolkien had a huge impact on me as a young teenager. Here is one of my favorite quotes from Gandalf: “Some believe it is only great power that can hold evil in check, but that is not what I have found. It is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay. Small acts of kindness and love.”

And that set up a major theme of LOTR–even small acts matter, from ordinary people. I think people really enjoyed hearing that. I know I did. 🙂

There’s nothing like a story that speaks to us through all the different stages of our lives. I wonder if artists like Tolkien knew how immeasurably impactful their words and stories have been…?

I think Tolkien did, at least somewhat. Many people wrote him very grateful letters. I’m glad he got to experience the success of his great work while he was still alive. : )

It really is. Other than the Bible, LoTR has been by far and away the most important book I ever read. : )
