The Heart’s Lullaby is an evocative little book revolving around the theme of love, in all it’s permutations–fertile poetic ground that has inspired the likes of Shakespeare, Longfellow, and Kipling. Ms. Ducy is none of these, of course–she has her own style, and she covers a wide range. The poems travel from the ecstasy of romantic love fulfilled to the soul-rending pain of love lost, and all points in between. My favorite line among these was:
“Tears are now my souvenirs
For that perfect day has come and gone.”
There are poems on the love of children, of parents, and on the inevitability of time. My favorite poem, titled simply “Time” begins:
“Time
Is not an enemy
Of the heart
But a tempest for the mind…”
